UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet

Michelle Bachelet, the recently appointed Executive Director of UN Women is in London this week. She is making her first visit to the UK since the launch of UN Women in February.

UN Women is a new body, created through the amalgamation of of UNIFEM and 3 other UN bodies to work towards gender equality and the empowerment of women worldwide more effectively.

Bachelet will meet with ministers including Secretary of State for International Development Andrew Mitchell, the Home Secretary Theresa May, International Development Minister Alan Duncan. They are to discuss how the UK and UN Women can work together.

There is concern that UN Women may not receive the powers and funds needed to fulfil its vital mission. Womankind is working with other groups to push for UN Women to be sufficiently resourced to fulfil its essential work to end the discrimination that keeps millions of women in poverty. We are part of the Godmothers campaign to help ensure UN Women gets the powers and funding it needs – find out what you can do to help.

Womankind is attending various events with Michelle Bachelet this week. Look out for updates on Facebook, Twitter and our News page throughout her visit.
