Research in schools

At WOMANKIND we want to know how, who and what can be done in schools to stop violence against women. We have been working with researchers and schools since 2003 to build a body of evidence. We're currently working with the Thomas Coram Institute and five schools to explore the process of developing and implementing a programme of activities to stop violence against women.

Integrated government strategy

The government is currently developing an integrated strategy to end violence against women. This is a great step towards a cohesive and effective approach. It provides an excellent opportunity to ensure that prevention through education is high on the agenda and that the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) is actively engaged.

Department for Children, Schools & Families

WOMANKIND is a member of the DCSF advisory group on violence against women and girls. This is an exciting opportunity to engage with the government to develop and implement a strategy to stop violence against women through education.

Personal, Social, Health, Economic Education (PSHE)

WOMANKIND welcomes the government's proposal to make PSHE a statutory topic on the National Curriculum. This would be a great opportunity to ensure that all children learn about respectful and non-violent relationships.

Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls: A study of educational programmes

By Jane Ellis, University of Warwick, 2004.

This is a study of educational programmes for children and young people in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. The report was published in December 2003 and was written by Jane Ellis (Research Fellow at The Centre for the Study of Safety and Well-Being, University of Warwick). The aim of the research was to provide a comprehensive overview, analysis and evaluation of how violence against women and girls (VAW&G) is currently addressed in UK schools.
