GEARING up for change

WOMANKIND and nearly 300 other organisations, in more than 50 countries, is demanding a better funded, more powerful UN agency to fight for women’s rights.

We’re part of the Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR Campaign) calling for systematic reform of the UN gender apparatus.

This demands leadership at the highest levels, integration of agencies, and proper funding and development for women and gender issues.

WOMANKIND, its 34 partners, and other women’s organisations will be better equipped to lobby for equality, an end to violence against women — and the mobilisation of resources for women — if we have the crucial UN infrastructure.

Join our campaign by writing to David Miliband, Foreign Secretary (or your Foreign Minister if you’re based outside the UK).

You can also view the detailed campaign demands — and we’ll keep you posted on developments as they happen.

Listen to a debate on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour, featuring Lesley Abdela.
