The year 2005 is a momentous one in the international calendar key events include the? ten year review of the Beijing Platform for Action, the Millennium Review Summit, the Commission for Africa report and the World Trade Organisation Ministerial talks.
These events provide both challenges and opportunities for womens rights organisations and activists.
WOMANKIND is working hard, together with our partners, to ensure that:
- global and national commitments to women are reinforced
- and that womens grass-roots experiences and viewpoints are fully integrated in the debates that will take place on human rights, security and development this year
Recently, WOMANKIND has:
- Jointly with our partners in Africa and with the UK Gender & Development Network, produced a submission to the Commission for Africa and put forward recommendations for strengthening the Commissions report (produced earlier this year)
- Lobbied the UK Government to ensure that gender equality and womens rights are central to the discussions at the Millennium Review Summit (14-16th September 2005)
- Joined with other members of the Make Poverty History campaign in Edinburgh to ensure that womens rights are at the forefront of discussions on aid, trade and debt at the G8 summit.
