WOMANKIND is celebrating successes ...

1.    South African WOMANKIND partner, the late Nomakuze Solwande (pictured), wins posthumously 2006 International Service Human Rights award for the defence of those living with HIV and AIDS.

2.    100 religious leaders campaign against female genital mutilation.

3.    DEMOS in Peru offers counselling and hope to thousands of women recovering from sexual violence after 20 years of civil conflict.

4.    Over 40 media spots following the publication of Taking Stock: Afghan women and girls five years on.

5.    Working with other women’s-rights advocates around the world to push for a better-resourced UN women’s agency.

6.    Supporting partners in Zimbabwe working tirelessly for the enactment of a domestic violence bill.

7.    WOMANKIND www.respect4us.org.uk website wins the safer-surfing category in the Lilith Project annual awards 2006.
8.    After years of campaigning, Ghana passes domestic violence bill which means women experiencing violence will now be able to seek redress in court.

… and working on challenges

1.    Keeping up pressure on the Afghan government and international community to promote and uphold women’s civil rights.

2.    Giving solidarity and support to our Zimbabwean partners who demonstrate daily for democracy — and put their lives at risk.

3.    Two years on from the tsunami, making sure that tribal communities in India continue to gain rights such as housing.

4.    Making audible the voices of indigenous women in Bolivia who face an increasingly macho environment.

5.    Providing support and solidarity to women's organisations in Somalia that continue to work with communities in the face of civil war being fostered by outside forces.

6.    Translating the new 2007 UK Gender Duty legislation — obliging all public bodies to promote equality — into positive action.

7.    Commission on the Status of Women 2007 — ensuring our partners’ voices and experiences are heard at this crucial international forum on women’s rights.

8.    Working with our Ethiopian partners on raising awareness of the harmful effects of female genital mutilation.

You can read much more about this work — and the impact it has on individual women — elsewhere on the WOMANKIND website.  Thank you for your support and solidarity.  It really will make a difference and show women all over the world we care and want to support their efforts.
