We have been working with a number of partner organisations, supporting programmes at local level as well as helping implement longer-term policy changes.

Such partnerships enable women to:
Raising awareness and campaigning to change attitudes is a core part of our partners work amongst some of Tamil Nadu’s most marginalised women from tribal communities.? Many run programmes which strengthen educational opportunities for girls, encourage credit and income generating projects to help women move out of poverty, as well as establishing alternative livelihood projects, often based on traditional knowledge and skills.

Solidarity Action for Youth Women’s Empowerment


Five different organisations combine under the umbrella of Solidarity Action for Youth Women’s Empowerment:

1.?? ?People’s Association for Community Health Education Trust
Based in Madurai District, the Trust provides educational opportunities for women, in addition to training schemes covering basic health care and other issues relevant to local women’s needs and concerns.

2.?? ?Social Welfare Organisation Trust
Working throughout the Sivaganga District, the Trust works to promote the development of women and children, as well as their wider communities, through a combination of informal education and income generating enterprises.

3.?? ?Society for Women’s Education Economic Development
Based in Madurai District, the Society provides informal education to girls and boys and supports training and rights awareness workshops for women, encouraging them to stand for elections and participate in the decision-making process of their communities and region.

4.?? ?Women Wishva Service Society
Based in Virudhunagar District, the Society promotes the empowerment and development of women and children within their communities through leadership and decision-making training and income generating micro-enterprises.

5.?? ?National Institute of Women, Child & Rural Health
Supporting women’s self empowerment, self esteem and political participation, the Institute works in the Madurai District to promote the development of women and children within their communities.

Women’s Empowerment Network Action Cluster


A further five organisations combine under the umbrella of the Women’s Empowerment Network Action Cluster:

1)?? ?Centre for Women’s Development & Research
Working with Chennai’s poorest women slum dwellers, the Centre focuses on creating and strengthening educational opportunities for girls; promoting women’s organisation into sanghams (groups) and domestic worker’s unions to lobby for better employment rights; and enables women to move out of poverty through credit and income generating projects.

2)?? ?Gandhian Unit for Integrated Development
Working with Chengelput’s dalit women, as well as those from other marginalised groups, the Unit provides rights awareness training for women,? in addition to counselling and free legal aid for those suffering from dowry harassment, and domestic violence.

3)?? ?Irula Tribal Women’s Welfare Society
The Welfare Society supports the area’s tribal and indigenous women to develop leadership skills, enabling them to participate fully in civil and political affairs on equal terms with men.? In addition, the Society encourages the creation of alternative livelihoods for women using traditional skills and knowledge.

4)?? ?Rural Women’s Development Society
Supporting marginalised dalit women, the Society campaigns and networks with other Dalit organisations to provide rights awareness and empowerment training for women, as well as raising awareness of issues concerning violence against dalit women.

5)?? ?Society for Awareness Knowledge & Training for Integration
Based in the South Arcot District, the Society supports marginalised women to access education and livelihood opportunities, allowing them to move out of poverty and participate more fully in the decision making process of their families and communities.
