The current programme focuses on the following critical issues:
Economic rightsEncouraging equal opportunities for women in employment, and promoting related policies amongst local governments and non-governmental organizations in the regions of Lima, Ica and La Libertad
Violence against women and sexual & reproductive rightsPromoting sexual and reproductive rights amongst men and women through awareness-raising and campaigning activities, and building partnerships between Andean communities, non-governmental organizations, policy makers and service providers to reduce violence
Political participationEmpowering leaders of local womens groups to influence local and regional governments in the promotion of gender equality and civil rights in the region of San Martin
Human rights awareness raising and advocacyRaising awareness of womens human rights and violence against women amongst men, women and the media
Through these activities, we hope to achieve the following practical outcomes:
- Increase the awareness of womens rights in regard to violence and reproduction, and womens increased capacity to assert these rights
- Improve the ability of ordinary women, public officials and non-governmental organizations to lobby against violence against women, and the improvement of related policies and services
- Develop the skills of women leaders to lobby for the integration of womens specific concerns in formal politics
- Strengthen the capacity of womens organizations to help achieve these goals
Future programme developmentWOMANKIND is expanding its work in Peru by working with new and existing partners to tackle a wider range of forms of violence against women.? These will include:
Sexual abuse before, during and after armed conflictsEnabling the people of Manta, a region particularly affected by sexual violence during the civil war, to better cope with its impact, and to improve the justice process
Prostitution and the trafficking of womenHelping the people of Ica, Cusco and Tacna become more sensitive to issues surrounding prostitution and sexual violence, thus paving the way for improvements in related policies
HIV/AIDS and its intersection with violence against womenEnsuring that the women of Ica are less vulnerable to contracting HIV, and to raise the populations awareness of HIV/AIDS and its links with violence against women
