Partner Organisation: CADEP

CADEP works with indigenous communities in the high Andes.

Areas of work: Sexual and reproductive health
Strengthening indigenous men and women to claim their sexual and reproductive rights, by raising awareness of these across communities. This involves ensuring that individuals know what they can expect from each other, from their local community and from publics services, and that local government recognise and accept their responsibilities. Work on domestic violence and other forms of violence against women is carried out at all levels from school-based workshops, community-based campaigns and peer education (for young people) to awareness raising with the local police.

WOMANKIND focus
Education and awareness raising on violence against women and women’s sexual and reproductive rights.

CADEP is working with WOMANKIND in the Cusco area to ensure that its work has a women’s rights perspective and takes account of women’s needs as women articulate them, not just as they are framed within the dominant, macho culture.

Partner workers: Yane Mendoza and Omar Carreon

Yane is pleased with the impact of their work. Traditionally at Fiestas young men would kidnap girls and take them away on horseback for a week or more. The girls would be raped and would then be expected to marry their rapist. Previously these girls often felt they had no choice, but now girls who have been kidnapped are now asserting their right to refuse to marry their abductor if they do not like him, and to choose to marry someone else.
