Everyone has the right to a life free from violence or the threat of violence.

Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that:
emptyEveryone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.empty
This right can only be realised if we all recognise that such rights do not just belong to us as individuals, but as participants in relationships and members of a community where everyone has the same right.

The Universal Declaration of Human rights recognises this in article 29 where it clarifies our shared responsibility to protect each others’ rights:
emptyEveryone has duties to the community in which alone the free and full development of his personality is possibleempty

Violence, whether physical or psychological, is an abuse of power, a failure to respect the other person, and to recognise their human dignity. By learning that if we want respect we must give respect, we can build relationships that are free from violence and coercion, making our families, schools and communities stronger and more just.

Welcome to Challenging Violence, Changing Lives, WOMANKIND Worldwide’s Programme for secondary school students and their teachers in the UK.

The Programme - We aim to raise awareness and transform attitudes to stop violence against women. We belive that one important way of addressing this is by working on a better understanding of the role played by gender sterotypes.

The Challenge - Almost half of all adult women in England & Wales have experienced domestice violence, sexual assault or stalking. (British Crime Survey 2004)

Get involved - To help you Challenge Violence and Change Lives in your school, in your area, across the UK and around the globe we have developed a range of features:

  • A free CD Rom with 12 PSHE and citizenship lessons for years 9 & 10 looking at healthy relationships and at challenging gender-based violence.
  • A Stop Sexual Bullying campaign with a code of practice created by young people, downloadable assemblies and lesson plans.
  • A White Ribbon Campaign 2006 for young people in schools to raise awareness and run their won campaign to Stop Violence Against Women in the UK and to Stop Sexual Bullying in their School.
  • Respect4Us an interactive website for young people to explore issues of violence that surround them.
  • Information for schools committed to teaching the whole school pilot from years 7-11, including on-line tests for pilot schools.
  • An on-line tool kit to enable students to run their own White Ribbon campaign around the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25th November).
  • Information about WOMANKIND’s overseas partners, to add a global dimension to your understanding of the issues raised in lessons.
  • Facilities for ordering additional materials to support your campaign.
