In the past year, Womankind has supported 36,641 women in South Africa to change their lives by:

  • Eliminating the high levels of violence against women
  • Mobilizing political will and resources for women’s rights and development

With one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world, our work in South Africa continues to prioritize tackling violence:

Eliminating violence against women

The situation

South Africa has one of the highest rates of sexual assault, rape and domestic violence in the world. The health risks associated with gender based violence include physical and sexual injury, pregnancy, and increased risk to contracting HIV:

  • 55.5% of women have reported suffering from physical and sexual abuse by a male partner
  • 15% of men have admitted committing sexual violence towards their partners and 42.5% have admitted to being physically violent.
  • 29.4% of pregnant women are living with HIV.

What Womankind is doing

We are working with our partners to:

How you can help

  • £12 could teach a rural woman living in poverty in South Africa her basic human rights and where to go for help if she experiences violence.
  • £17 could provide training for a community worker in para-legal skills, who can then train others, and provide basic legal advice to many women in South Africa.
  • £24 could provide an attorney for a poor rural South African woman or girl who would not otherwise have access to legal assistance to help them achieve a just outcome in a case of divorce, child support or protection order.

You can help by giving today.
