Womankind in Uganda
Womankind’s work in Uganda aims to:
• Eliminate and raise awareness of violence against women.
• Build women’s capacity to ensure full participation and effective organisation
To achieve this Womankind and our partners are addressing the underlying causes of discrimination against women in two main ways.
Eliminating and raising awareness on violence against women -
What Womankind is doing:
We are working with our partners to:
• Generate, disseminate and increase information flow through drama and community-based campaigns around gender-based violence against women and girls (GBVAWG) in order to build the capacity of women, women leaders, children, teachers, religious leaders and other opinions leaders in the community advocate against GBVAWG
• Empower women conflict survivors in north and north eastern Uganda and increase their capacity to tackle violence against women
• Raise awareness of the Domestic Violence Act and mobilise and organise communities in the two districts to develop community-based solutions to domestic violence
Raising women’s voice in decision making
What Womankind is doing
We are working with our partners to:
• Provide leadership training for women and the space to interact with government to raise awareness among policy makers of the practical needs of women in post-conflict Uganda
• Provide girls with the education that is crucial to gaining the knowledge, skills, and confidence that women need to improve their status and health
How you can help
• 30p will pay for a flyer to be produced and distributed within communities in Uganda that draws attention to the harm caused by domestic violence and how perpetrators can be prosecuted under the new Domestic Violence Act.
• £50 will pay for a radio advert to draw attention to the terrible cost of domestic violence in Uganda and how perpetrators can now be prosecuted under the new Domestic Violence Act.
• £33 trains one woman in leadership and advocacy and puts her in touch with district level decision-makers within formal dialogues to help her voice her needs.
• £55 will provide livelihood support to one individual in post-conflict Uganda to help them rebuild their life
