Sally Baden, Chair of Trustees
Sally is a specialist and advocate on women’s economic empowerment and rights, with a life long commitment to women’s rights.  

She has worked professionally on gender equality and economic justice issues for 25 years, across academia, international NGOs, and the private sector. She has lived and worked in countries including Senegal, Mali, DRC, Tanzania, Ethiopia, India, Nicaragua and China. Sally currently leads the portfolio on Women’s Economic Empowerment for Social Development Direct, a specialist consulting firm on gender equity and social inclusion. Prior to this, Sally worked for Oxfam (2001-13) and at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex (1992-2000), where she co-directed the Masters programme on Gender and Development.  She has a BA in Chinese and French and Master’s degrees in Agricultural Economics and Development Studies. 

Sally has been active in the international women’s rights movement since the early 1990s. She participated in the 1995 NGO Forum of the UN 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing and was a member of the International Planning Committee for the 1999 AWID Forum and in 1998, participated in a women’s delegation to Nicaragua to support women and communities affected by Hurricane Mitch. She is a current member of the UK GAD network, of AWID and the International Association of Feminist Economists. 
Sally has extensive networks in the international development sector, having worked for or with international agencies, NGOs and Foundations, including Oxfam, the UK Government's Department for International Development (DFID), Comic Relief, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Swedish International Development Agencies. Sally has experience of speaking publicly on gender equality issues in variety of forums and has authored numerous journal articles, research reports, blogs, and policy briefings. During 2014-2015, Sally was substantive editor for UN Women’s flagship Progress of the World’s Women: Transforming Economies, Realizing Rights. Sally has been a Womankind Trustee since 2013, and was Interim Chair of Womankind from July 2015 to November 2016.
