Womankind Worldwide is delighted to announce the formal appointment of Maggie Baxter OBE as our new Chair. Maggie, who was our Executive Director over a decade ago, has remained a committed supporter and we are honoured that she is coming back to lead our Board of Trustees.

Maggie has a long and impressive track record in women's rights and international development and has worked in the voluntary sector for some 40 years. Maggie’s achievements were recognised in 2010 when she was awarded an OBE for her services to the voluntary sector and women’s philanthropy.

On her appointment as Chair of Womankind, Maggie said: Returning to Womankind, this time as Chair, is a true honour. I have been continually impressed by the passion, expertise and impact of Womankind and that has only grown stronger over the years.

"Today, the organisation continues to refine its approach and is transforming the lives of women and their rights in bold and pioneering ways. I look forward to supporting that, from the grassroots level to the international stage.”

Womankind will benefit greatly from Maggie’s extensive women’s rights experience. Maggie was the founding Chair of Rosa, the first UK fund for women and girls, and now serves as an Ambassador. She is also a former Chair of Women for Refugee Women and Green Belt Movement International - Europe and an Advisory Committee member of Oxfam.

Maggie has also worked with several grant makers, serving as an advisor, Trustee or on grant-making committees. These include the Baring Foundation, the True Colours Trust, Trust for London and Hilden Charitable Fund. At Comic Relief, Maggie served as Deputy Chief Executive and Grants Director and was responsible for the allocation of all Red Nose Day income in both the UK and Africa. She was seconded from Comic Relief to set up the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

Womankind Chief Executive, Caroline Haworth, commented:

“I am over-the-moon that Maggie is re-joining Womankind in the Chair. I have been aware of Maggie’s work for decades and hold her in the highest regard, as do so many who have rubbed shoulders with her in numerous roles.

“Maggie is an experienced Chair and Trustee and brings decades of experience and knowledge to Womankind. But more than that, she brings her integrity, passion and commitment to our cause – and her warmth and kindness. I am hugely looking forward to working with her and am truly excited by all that we might deliver together.”

Maggie’s appointment coincides with a very exciting time at Womankind, as we are working to support the strengthening of women’s movements and innovative women’s rights initiatives under our 2016-2021 organisational strategy.

Womankind expresses immense thanks and appreciation to Sally Baden, who stepped down as Chair at the end of a successful term of office, and to Vice Chairs Tania Cohen and Laura Hucks who provided us with sterling support in the interim. We are delighted that Sally, Tania and Laura continue to serve on our Board.

Maggie added: “I am thrilled to support the delivery of Womankind’s inspiring women’s movements strategy, which has the know-how, vision and scope to deliver meaningful and lasting change to the lives of women. Womankind is on a brilliant journey in the global women’s rights movement and I am delighted to be part of it.”
