Humanitarian Assistance for Women and Children of Afghanistan (HAWCA)

  • Afghanistan
HAWCA runs legal aid centres for women survivors of violence in Herat and Kabul. They also run a programme on peace building and conflict resolution for children.

HAWCA is one of the few key women’s organisations in Afghanistan that works to ensure the active participation of women in the reconstruction and development process that is underway in the country.

The organisation was set up in 1999 to support the many  Afghan women and children living in poverty and without fundamental rights. Since then HAWCA has been actively involved in protecting and promoting the human rights of women and children. The organisation runs legal programmes, gives women education and work skills and encourages them to speak out and make their voices heard.

Womankind and HAWCA are working together to educate and support women human rights defenders so they create awareness of women's rights and hold people accountable on the Ending Violence Against Women Law.
