How do you put feminism into action at Womankind?
I put feminism into action by practicing the values and commitments that Womankind seeks to uphold. I will cascade these values and commitments to partners and will ensure that our partnerships are strong, inclusive, mutually beneficial and based on relationships of trust and respect.
Tell us about your feminist journey?
As a young woman, I grew up in a highly patriarchal society in rural Kenya, where I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by women and girls around me. From the lack of access to basic needs like sanitary towels to the normalisation of domestic violence, where women were physically abused and felt compelled to stay, I developed an early awareness of the injustices that excessively affect women. These experiences pushed me to pursue a degree in social work and commit my career to working with organisations that amplify the voices of women and other marginalised communities/individuals. Through my journey, I have worked with so many feminist organisations and learnt that feminist partnerships depend on intentionality. For me, feminist partnerships are about collaborations, solidarity, accountability, and leading with care. For reference, I have co-developed programmes with partners and not imposed programmes that would not work for them. Feminist partnership, to me, is not just about what we do but how we show up for each other.
A feminist hero of yours?
One feminist who inspires me is my mother. Raised in a deeply patriarchal society and married into one, she never let those systems define her dreams for us. Despite the odds, she ensured that all five of her daughters received a quality education. Her quiet strength, unwavering belief in our potential, and resistance through care and sacrifice continue to shape my feminist values every day.
