Full Report: Why Feminists Should Lead

At a moment when the global community stands at a crossroads when it comes to gender equality, “Why Feminists should lead” powerfully affirms that gender equality is not possible without the full and fearless participation and leadership of women in all their diversities across the private and public spheres of society.

Commissioned by the AWESOME Programme, this report documents and analyses the lived experiences, systemic barriers, and bold strategies of Womankind partners and feminist leaders across Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nepal and Afghanistan. It not only challenges the limited, often tokenistic approaches to women’s participation and leadership, it reimagines leadership as collective, community rooted and transformative.

At a time when the anti-rights and anti-gender movements are rising globally and political goodwill is dwindling with regard to gender equality commitments, threatening hard won gains for gender justice– this report is a call to governments, civil society, donors, funders and movements to center feminist leadership for a just and inclusive future.
