How do you put feminism into action at Womankind?
My contribution as a trustee of Womankind is to ensure staff have supportive frameworks around them to successfully pursue their purpose and goals. My background is in storytelling – film, television and the arts – and I believe in these forms as powerful tools for creating awareness, discourse and change. I also assist the Womankind team by looking out for connections and introductions in these industry spaces, linking the charity with platforms and creatives who are aligned with Womankind’s message to amplify their work and raise awareness of this amazing charity.
Tell us about your feminist journey?
My journey began when I was young. My mother was my early feminist hero. I feel lucky to have had that energy at home. Subsequently, when I started working in film and television, I became aware of how powerful expressed feminism can be in these spaces. So many of these workplaces were male-led, telling stories from male points of view; from superhero movies to characters with complex emotional journeys, women weren’t very often centred and this seems to be shifting now. Stories, wherever they come from, influence culture and help shape narratives about who we are and where we are going. Not only is there space for diversifying these workplaces and stories, there is huge commercial value in reaching so many underserved audiences. It’s important to make the change culturally rather than just economically, so there’s a hidden challenge there to ensure that things aren’t just shifting cosmetically.
A feminist hero of yours?
Anyone who recognises the patriarchal imbalance and works in their daily life to make change is a feminist hero, because this work is never without challenge.
