Advocacy

Why advocacy

As an international women’s rights organisation and funder, we are operating in a rapidly shifting advocacy context. In recent years, the political will and commitment to addressing gender justice has diminished. Not only has the prioritisation of private and corporate interests significantly impacted feminist organising, but we are also seeing a general pushback of women’s rights globally. This means that feminist advocacy is needed now more than ever to shift power, decolonise the practice, resource the revolution and centre wellbeing within the women’s rights movement.

Our approach to advocacy

Together with our partners, Womankind spotlights trends in violence against women and girls, women’s participation and leadership and women’s economic rights, and advocates for decision-makers and governments to change laws and policies that negatively impact women. Alongside our partners and other women’s rights organisations, we run campaigns and events to highlight causes, impacts and solutions to these trends.

We speak with and not on behalf of women. Our policy-advocacy work is deeply rooted in the experience and expertise of the women we work with, and a key part of our role is to support partners in their own advocacy activities.

Given our position in the Global North, we influence and challenge the UK government directly to keep women’s rights at the heart of the UK’s international development work, and to speak up for women’s rights globally.
