How do you put feminism into action at Womankind?
As a Philanthropy Officer, I put feminism into action at Womankind by collaboratively utilising my time, talents and networks to unlock philanthropic support for feminist movements arounds the world. As a philanthropy professional, I love exploring how we can connect like-minded individuals and organisations to fund gender justice.
Tell us about your feminist journey
One of my first feminist memories was listening to Christina Aguilera’s “Can’t Hold Us Down.” Even at age 11, the lyrics resonated deeply, and I’ve been on a journey ever since to challenge the norms of what’s expected of girls and to champion equality. From tackling period poverty and transforming workplace equality policies, to increasing intersectionality in philanthropy and now raising two girls, my feminism is always evolving and finding new outlets to champion.
A feminist hero of yours?
It’s hard to name just one – I’ve been inspired by so many, including (the queen Ms Aguilera mentioned above), Michelle Obama, Gloria Steinem, Zadie Smith, Melinda French Gates, and all the feminist activists championing women’s equality globally. But one person who has particularly shaped my thinking on philanthropy and feminism is Katharine Dexter McCormick. She was an American suffragist and millionaire who funded most of the research behind the first birth control pill. She is proof of how transformational philanthropic capital can be for the feminist movement.
