How do you put feminism into action at Womankind?
By making this co-leadership a real success and learning opportunity for Womankind, Diana and me. I use my leadership style of working collaboratively, striving for change and acting with humility to ensure that Womankind lives its values by being more partner centred and valuing our diverse staff and trustees, I want the organisation to stay relevant by using its position to influence decision makers and grow an aligned supporter base and I want drive change to make Womankind’s bold and ambitious strategy come to life.
Tell us about your feminist journey?
As someone who was born in India but grew up in Sweden I could see from a very young age the different freedoms and opportunities women have depending on where they live. That unfairness stayed with me and I became more interested in social justice.
After 10 years of working in fundraising and communications for social just causes including Crisis, Asylum Aid, The Mental Health Foundation and Refugee Action I joined Womankind in 2010. Womankind was my favourite charity and I was a regular donor so when the opportunity came up to work here I was delighted and honoured.
A feminist hero of yours?
Madhur Jaffrey is my feminist hero. Appearing on the stage and screen and bringing Indian food to the West; she pushed the boundaries of what people expected of Asian women.
