How do you put feminism into action at Womankind?
I put feminism into action at Womankind through our fundraising practices; aiming to fund our partners with as much flexibility as possible and give them the autonomy to develop and implement projects that will advance women’s rights in their communities. As the Trusts & Foundations Manager, I’m excited to bring donors on this journey and ensure our partners have the funding and resources to continue building out their amazing work.
Tell us about your feminist journey?
During undergrad, I had an amazing mentor who challenged my way of thinking and introduced me to feminist writers, theorists and activists. This really shaped my understanding of feminism and helped me put my feminist ideals into practice. Since graduating, I’ve worked in the charitable sector in both the US and the UK, working for organisations with an eye towards social justice. Through this work, I saw how identities such as race, class and gender intersected to create unique sets of barriers and opportunities. I’m excited to now be working at Womankind where working through an intersectional paradigm is mainstreamed throughout our practices!
A feminist hero of yours?
A feminist hero of mine is bell hooks. I was introduced to her writings early on in my feminist journey and her ideas helped to inform my understanding of feminism today. Her ideas challenged the white liberal feminism I was used to, highlighting how race, class and other identities intersect with gender to create different experiences. Her writing style is powerful and accessible, and I find myself revisiting her books often.
