How do you put feminism into action at Womankind?
I try to make sure the communications and updates I write and share via mail and email centre women’s voices. I want our supporters to hear directly about women’s experiences, strengths, and the change they’re leading.
Tell us about your feminist journey?
While studying International Development at university I became interested in how gender impacts people’s experiences and wrote my dissertation on gendered aid in disaster relief. It opened my eyes to how disasters affect women differently, simply because they are women. One example that has stayed with me was learning about communities rebuilding after an earthquake where only men were consulted about reconstruction, despite women being equally affected. It really made me realise how often women aren’t included in decisions that directly affect them.
A feminist hero of yours?
I’m inspired by the women around me in my own life, and especially by women leading grassroots movements around the world. Their commitment to creating change in their own communities is incredible, and it’s something I’m reminded of every day through Womankind’s work.
