How will you put feminism into action at Womankind?
As Honorary Treasurer, I contribute to the achievement of Womankind’s ambitious strategy by supporting the team through scrutiny and advice to ensure our financial records are transparent. I work with the team to ensure the principles that drive Womankind are embedded in the way funding is allocated and managed with our partners, ensuring their empowerment and long-term sustainability.
Tell us about your feminist journey?
My journey towards advocating for gender equality has been a quiet but persistent one. While I may not label myself a feminist, my unwavering belief in equality for all has shaped my actions. Growing up in South Africa and working across Africa exposed me to the harsh realities women face daily. Witnessing their struggles for basic rights and equal treatment ignited a passion within me. Women’s strength fuels our world – at home, in society, and the workplace. We’re far from achieving universal rights and security, but I’m driven by the hope that my small contributions can help pave the way for a more equitable future.
A feminist hero of yours?
My feminist hero is Bell Hooks. Her eloquent writings and fearless advocacy sparked crucial conversations on gender equality, challenging societal norms. She left nobody out and explored the intersections of sexuality, race, gender and spirituality in a simple and easy way to understand. She paved the way for policy changes, inspiring countless women to rise above adversity and strive for lasting change.
