The 25 Challenge

Women make up ½ of the world’s population.
Yet just ¼ of the world’s parliamentarians are women.
25% to be exact.

Ekta Nepali is the member of Nepali Congress and the Intra Dalit Women’s Alliance from Nepalgunj, Nepal.

Women legislators are more likely to support “women’s issue” bills that focus, for example, on education, child-care, and family health legislation than their male counterparts. We know that the unequal representation of women in government directly correlates with the unequal treatment of women in wider society.

This International Women’s Day, we’re highlighting this 25%…1 in 4 parliamentarians being women is not enough – we must take action!

What’s involved?

We’ve come up with a list of fundraising challenges inspired by the number 25 –choose one (or come up with your own!) and start to be loud for women! We may still be facing lockdown restrictions this International Women’s Day, so our challenges ideas can all be done from your home…

Challenge ideas:

  • Walk or run for 25 minutes each day for 25 days
  • Practise yoga for 25 minutes each day for 25 days
  • Write 25 lines of a feminist poem
  • Take 25 interesting photographs
  • Bake 25 cupcakes
  • Teach yourself a new skill in 25 days e.g learn to solve a Rubik’s cube
  • Practise mediation each day for 25 days
  • Host a Zoom tea party with 25 people
  • Host a virtual relay race (each member of the race runs or walks a certain distance until a set distance – perhaps 2500 metres, 25000 steps, 25 kilometres – is achieved between the members)

Each challenge is modifiable to age and ability so anyone can take part. Feel free to come up with your own challenge inspired by one of our suggestions!

How to take part

  • Once you have decided on your challenge, set up a free fundraising page using JustGiving or Virgin Money Giving. Search for Womankind Worldwide and follow the simple steps to get started.
  • Next, let people know on social media so that they can sponsor you! Here is a sample post you can use:

Women make up just 25% of parliamentarians worldwide – that’s only 1 in 4! I’m taking part in @woman_kind 25 Challenge to support women leaders gain the confidence, skills & knowledge to CLAIM THEIR RIGHTS. You can sponsor me here: [link to fundraising page] #WomenPoweringWomen

We hope you will join us to speak up for women leaders across the world this International Women’s Day. However much you can raise will go a long way in making a difference. Plus, it’s a bit of fun to help us get through each day in lockdown!
