Maryam Rahmani, Womankind Worldwide’s advisor/advocate on Afghanistan, has spoken about women’s rights and women’s peace and security on a new podcast produced by the Gender Action for Peace and Security (GAPS) civil society network.

Maryam discussed challenges to women and girls’ rights and the global response a year and a half after the withdrawal of international forces, the government’s collapse, and the country’s handover to Taliban forces.

Womankind recently launched a new strategy supporting women’s rights organisations and women human rights defenders (WHRDs) in Afghanistan and neighbouring Pakistan to:

  • contribute to the sustained presence of women-led organisations in the region.
  • support women’s rights organisations to continue to coordinate, advocate and deliver their work for Afghan women and girls.
  • contribute to the safety and protection of WHRDs.
  • increase women and girls’ access to sustainable income and improve self-sufficiency.

Women’s full and equal participation in public and political life in Afghanistan is essential to addressing the multiple crises confronting the country and must be seen as a guarantee of their human rights.
