Setaweet (meaning ‘of woman’) in Amharic is a contemporary feminist movement founded in July 2014. They are a home-grown, grassroots, and uniquely Ethiopian collective of women and men who are dedicated to the empowerment and liberation of all Ethiopian women and men.
Through feminist engagement in both voluntary and private sectors, Setaweet enables women to come together to solve the problems of inequality and empowers women to take charge on feminist issues such as gender-based violence, equal pay, economic empowerment, and equality in care work.
Setaweet are the first feminist research and training movement in Ethiopia which offers tailor-made gender equality services for schools, agencies and corporate companies seeking to create a better and equal world for women and men alike. Setaweet’s activism for gender equality is also notable through their campaigns which have sparked national conversation around gender-based discrimination in Ethiopia.
