Yvonne Ndirangu- the feminist sister

Yvonne Ndirangu is a pan-African feminist and digital content creator- currently serving at Womankind Worldwide as a Communications Officer. As a storyteller she’s been keen on amplifying the voices of women and girls across digital platforms. 

 Where would you cluster yourself in the feminist space? Are you an igniter, disrupter, defender, front-liner or sister? 

 I see myself as a sister, walking in solidarity with women, girls and my peers across all issues focused on human rights. As a frontliner I’ve been vocal in spaces such as the End Femicide march in Kenya. 

 Would you share with us some of your milestones and contributions in the feminism movement? 

I still consider myself a student in the feminism movement and wouldn’t really speak of milestones. However, I’ve used my communication skills to amplify the voices of African feminists across various platforms. Other than that, I am still learning and finding new ways of decolonising communications and spotlighting feminist stories from a place of dignity. 

What are you celebrating on this Africa Day? OR Who are you celebrating on this Africa Day? 

This Africa Day I am doing more of introspection and reflection of my role as a woman, reminding myself of women’s role in African societies and how we’re progressing in implementing progressive women’s rights instruments around the world.  

 What would you like to reiterate in this year’s Africa day in relation to gender equality? And what’s your ideal Africa when it comes to realizing gender equality 

 Unpaid care work is one of the greatest injustices in the continent. Majority of the care givers are women with most economies still lagging in fostering equality across social structures and recognising paid care work.   

 As for my ideal gender equal Africa, I see economies that recognise women, economies that provide good healthcare systems and economies that at the very least respect human rights. 

Any special quote from feminist sisters or feminist respected leaders that you’d like to highlight on this Africa Day? 

 Liepollo Lebohang Pheko: “Once we understand our own power, I think that as a people we will be absolutely unstoppable.”
