“Disability is not a weakness. It is our strength”

Disabled people make up around 15 per cent of the world’s population. Around 1 in 5 women are Disabled, and they are present in every sphere of society. Yet Disabled women face intersecting forms of discrimination and societal barriers that affect their lives, opportunities and activism.

Despite these challenges, only a tiny portion of development funding is channelled to organisations and movements working on Disability rights, and even less reaches Disabled women’s organisations.

Even with limited funding and recognition, across Womankind’s focus countries, Disabled women are leading the way and demanding change – for themselves, in their communities, and throughout society. They are working to ensure that Disabled women are included, recognised and celebrated.

This past Disability Pride month, we spotlighted some of their important work, achievements and hopes for the future – one in which Disabled women, girls and people of all genders can live with joy, choice and dignity.
